Can someone be racist and not know it?

Last night on Bill Maher's HBO show, he made the statement that he thinks Donald Trump is racist and doesn't know it. Is that even possible? Doesn't the very premise of racism rely on hatred of a specific race, therefore requires malice? How can somebody be unknowingly, or unintentionally malicious?
