In Call of Duty: Black Ops Campaign, who is Resnov if he dies early on?

In Black Ops, you find out towards the end of the campaign that the supposed resnov who has been accompanying you on most missions is actually dead, so who actually is percieved as resnov? someone must've because he kills a few people, and dead people cant kill people.
